BLOOD: The Source of Life

Saturday, September 23, 2014

The bloodmobile made its bimonthly stop at U.K. this week and I paid them a visit. As I lay there pumping my little squishy ball, I gazed over at the Markey Cancer Center and considered the countless times Mother and I were there for her to get a unit or two of blood.
For the life of a creature is in the blood. . . .
Leviticus‬ ‭17:11‬ ‭NIV‬‬
And when, toward the end, she decided not to get any more blood, we slowly watched her life fade away. Within about three weeks she was gone.

So I pray for the recipient of my blood, that they will benefit from the life that it holds.

Scripture says a little more about the life-giving benefit of blood. Here is the remainder of the above verse in Leviticus :
. . . and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. Leviticus 17:11
In the Old Testament it was the act of sacrificing animals that atoned for the peoples' sins. Many passages in the law give exact directions on how to offer these sacrifices. But thankfully Jesus stood in as the unblemished Lamb and shed His live-giving blood to cover the sins of the world for all time.
How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭9:14‬ ‭NIV
Lord, thank you for the life that you give us all. And for the opportunity to live with you forever when our earthly life is over. Thank you for your life-giving blood.
