Top 10 Resolutions: Spend Less, Save More

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions:
Spend Less, Save More

Hm. This resolution might require a budget. What do you think? I don’t know about yours but my money has never behaved itself unless I have decided in advance what I wanted it to do – and then made it mind! So how do you do that?

FIRST – tithe.
I know. That probably is just as bad a word as “budget.”  But it shouldn’t be. In my experience, God wants my money to mind just as much as I do. And by tithing the FIRST 10% of my earnings, I am more careful with the other 90%. And don’t forget, tithing is scriptural.
“’A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. Every tithe of the herd and flock . . . will be holy to the Lord.’” Leviticus 27:30,32 NIV
As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits of their grain, new wine, olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything. 2 Chronicles 31:5 NIV
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” Malachi 3:10 NIV
Someone once said, “we can’t afford to tithe.”
To which came the response, “we can’t afford NOT to.”

SECOND – budget.
The concept is really simple. Write down all the things you have to pay for in a given month and add them up. Write down how much money actually comes in for each month. In order to save money, you should have more money coming in than going out.

In reality, if you've never had a budget, you probably need a little help thinking this through. There are several resources out there to help you create a budget.
                www.mappingyourfuture.org has a good easy-to-follow budget
www.youcandealwithit.com has an easy budget, too
www.daveramsey.com has a nice step-by-step approach to creating a budget
I'm partial to Dave Ramsey's approach to financial freedom.
  • It is based on Biblical principles.
  • They don't try to sell you a bunch of useless stuff.
  • One of our former church members now lives in Nashville and works for Mr. Ramsey.
  • Bill and I went through "Financial Peace University" at our church and implemented their strategies.
  • We tackled and eliminated all of our debt.
  • We put money aside for all of our expenses so that when they come due, we have the $$ to pay for them.
  • We NEVER carry a balance on our credit card (because we don't buy anything we don't have the money set aside for).
  • We have a fully funded emergency fund. So if an appliance goes out or we blow a couple of tires, we don't have to finance the purchase of replacements.
  • We saved all the $$ needed for our children to go to college.
  • And we have worked diligently on saving for our retirement.
None of this would have happened if we hadn't made our money behave itself. Thank you to Dave Ramsey for showing us how to do it.

And, in case you're wondering, you can attend a "Financial Peace University" nine-week class either on-line or with a local group. Many local churches offer the class for the community. There is a fee associated with it, but it is worth every penny -- only if you implement the strategies!

So there you have it. Line up your money and give it a big lecture. The time has come for YOU to be the boss and not your $$. You can do this. And the peace that comes from getting things in order is beyond description.

LORD, help us learn to be good stewards of all that you have given us -- including our finances. Help us to be generous toward your ministries. Help us take care of our families. And help us get out from under the burden of financial problems. We thank you in advance for the peace you have in store for us as a result of committing these things to You.

Top 10 Resolutions: Live Life to the Fullest

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions:

Live Life to the Fullest

How can we enjoy life to the fullest?

"In the end, we only regret the chances we didn't take."  Anonymous

"My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style."   Dr. Maya Angelou

"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist."  Oscar Wilde

"Life is like a roller coaster. It has its ups and downs. But it's your choice to scream or enjoy the ride."  anonymous

"Don't spend your life rehashing the past or looking forward to the next big thing. Investigate every moment and savor it."  Patience Fort

"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."  Matthew 6:34 ESV

"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."  2 Timothy 1:7 ESV

"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."  Psalm 16:11 ESV

"I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being." Psalm 146:2

"Whatever you do work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men."  Colossians 3:23

"This Book ... shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in itl. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."   Joshua 1:8

Living life to the fullest means having a healthy balance between cherishing the past, savoring the present, and looking forward to the future.

It means loving when no one else will.

It means going where no one else will.

It means speaking out when no one else will.

It means having the foresight to look into the future and to execute God's will there.

It means risking it all for the Lord and gaining everything eternally.

Lord, help us to use good common sense as we seek to live life to the fullest. Most of all, help us to live fully for You.

Top 10 New Year's Resolutions: Lose Weight

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions:
Lose Weight

This one is really easy. If you want to lose weight, here is the formula:
  • eat fewer calories in a given day than you burn
  • drink water
That's it.

So why is it, then, that so many Americans have such a problem with excess weight? There are probably a hundred answers to that question. What do you think?
  • inactivity
  • overeating
  • fast food
  • genetics
  • metabolic disorders
  • psychological issues
  • boredom
  • social pressures
  • portion sizes
  • soft drinks
  • processed foods . . . .
Chances are if you want to lose weight, you can probably easily pick out the reasons why you're overweight in the first place. So what tools are out there to help you accomplish this resolution?

FitBit has the ability to record how much water you drink and how many calories you consume. Of course it also tracks your walking, stair climbing, and physical activity.

MyFitnessPal is a smartphone app that also tracks food and water consumption.

DietBet is a worldwide challenge where you deposit money into an account and then strive to lose 10% of your body weight in 6 months: 3% the first month, 3% the second month, 2% the 3rd month, 1% the 4th month, 1% the 5th month, and maintain the 6th month. For every month that you meet your weight loss goal, you get money back from what you deposited.

StepBet follows the same premise as DietBet but it uses your fitness tracker (like FitBit) to track your progress.

Multiple activity apps are out there for your use.

Multiple gyms are available for people like me who just can't do physical activity on our own.

Multiple diet plans are out there, too. The best diet there is, though, is one that allows you to eat a well-balanced diet of fresh foods. It doesn't have to be any special program.  Just remember the formula above: expend more calories than you consume every day.

I don't know, y'all. With all these resources at our fingertips, it sure seems like losing weight should be a very attainable resolution. But like everything else, it requires planning and determination.

Lord, help us to remember that our bodies are a temple of your Holy Spirit and that we should treat it with respect. Give us the desire to please you -- to make our bodies more lean for your glory.

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions

My husband loves top ten lists. I found this one the other day on the Internet from a Nielsen poll taken a couple of years ago. Are you represented here? I am. I resolve not to make resolutions. (More about that in a minute.)

1.    Stay fit and healthy 37%
2.    Lose weight 32%
3.    Enjoy life to the fullest 28%
4.    Spend less, save more 25%
5.    Spend more time with family and friends 19%
6.    Get organized 18%
7.    Will not make any resolutions 16%
8.    Learn something new/new hobby 14%
9.    Travel more 14%
10. Read more 12%

I don't quite get the percentages for each response because they clearly add up to more than 100%.  But it's interesting to see that getting or staying healthy were at the top of the list.

We are going to look a little more closely at some of these resolutions as we approach the new year.

1. STAY FIT AND HEALTHY

This resolution implies that you are already fit and healthy -- physically. If that's true, then you already know how to stay that way.

No doubt this requires a balance between getting the proper nutrition, water, exercise, and sleep. (This clearly would not have been my response to the survey since I don’t do any of those very well.)

What about staying fit and healthy spiritually or socially or financially? How do we do that?

It’s safe to say that spiritual, social, or financial fitness requires proper balance.
Spiritual: nutrition (consumption of God’s word), water (dependence upon the Holy
Spirit – the living water) exercise (using our spiritual “muscles” to be prepared for spiritual challenges), rest (to avoid overload)
Social: nutrition (learning appropriate real-life social skills – NOT social MEDIA skills), exercise (purposefully practicing these skills), rest (taking a break from social media and having a life)
Financial: nutrition (learning sound financial practices from a Christian perspective), exercise (tithing, saving, planning, making your money behave), rest (don’t let $$ consume you)

Here’s the reason that I don’t make New Year’s resolutions – because I know that I will fail. Pretty quickly. And when we consider making a spiritual commitment to do “better,” none of us can succeed because we are human. Instead of trying to do “better” on our own, we should, instead, strive to depend more on the Lord for His strength and grace.

Lord, I want to be more physically fit but I know that won’t happen unless I work at it. And I want to be more spiritually fit, as well. But that won’t happen unless I am totally dependent on You. Give me the courage, strength, and willpower to grow spiritually and the grace I will need when I fail you.

John 17:5
And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.
John 1:1

The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again
The lame will walk, the dumb will sing the praises to the Lamb.

Mary, did you know that your baby boy was Lord of all creation?
John 1:2
Mary, did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Isaiah 9:6-7
Did you know that your baby boy is Heavens perfect Lamb?
John 1:36
And this sleeping child you're holding is the Great I Am.
Exodus 3:14, John 8:58

This is one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time. It so eloquently captures many of the prophecies from the Old Testament that came to fruition in our Lord. If you’ve never heard this song, I’ve provided a link to it. Close your eyes and enjoy its simplicity. Savor its rich harmony. Contemplate its complexity.

Lord, help us to praise you for all that you are.

The Rest of the Story: Advent 2006

So now, if you've been keeping up with the devotional guide, you've read about 25 entries from my mother's journal of 2006. Isn't it interesting how she wove together the ancient Scripture with the events and thoughts of her day?

But there's something that you may not know -- and I dare say you would not have been able to derive from her entries. At the time of these writings, mother was facing the impending death of her dear, sweet husband of 56 years -- my daddy. She was his primary caregiver and she loved daddy with all her heart. They were best friends. They were soulmates. She didn't know how much longer she would have him -- it would just be five months -- but she knew it wouldn't be long.

Mother's heart was breaking. She was watching her sweetheart drift further and further away from her. She stood by helplessly as his memory of all things vanished. By the time of these journal entries, daddy had lost his childhood, his stint in the Navy, his courtship of and marriage to my mother, his many years obtaining and utilizing his PhD in Education, his three daughters, his seven grandchildren, and his travels to Africa, Europe, China, and South America. Gone. This brought mother great sorrow.

Mother's body was suffering. Did you ever notice that she had very limited range of motion with both of her arms? That's because she had torn up both shoulders taking care of daddy.

Why was this pain and sorrow not reflected in her writings? Oh, it was. It was manefested in her utmost trust in her sovereign Lord. She made the conscious decision to focus on Him so that the difficulties of her life would take on proper perspective.

Do we do that? Do we spend the first hours of every day absorbing the Lord's word and savoring His communion with us? Or do we say, "I don't have the time," or "I just don't feel like it." Really.

Did you notice the author of the poem mother included in her Christmas Day writing? Unknown. Mother was a stickler for giving written credit where credit was due. If she truly had no idea who had written that poem, she would have stated that in her entry. Instead, there was no mention at all of the author in her work -- I added that when I reproduced it for my blog. Why did she do that? I think it was because she was the author and didn't want any accolades for what she wrote. Doesn't that sound just like her?

In the same way, mother would be extremely uncomfortable with our placing her up on some spiritual pedestal where, really, only one person belongs. Our Jesus.

So as you learn the rest of mother's 2006 story, remember this. No matter what our circumstances, we owe God our life. Let's act like it.

The Christ Candle

For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6

I looked for Him in a manger
But the straw had turned to tinsel
And the colored lights of men cast a glow
Which seemed to give no light at all – just darkness.
He was not there and my heart cried.

A light came from somewhere
For a shadow was so clear as it fell across the manger
And the plastic figures with their faces set toward nothing.
A cross?
A cross had claimed the fragile one who once was here?
From somewhere down deep inside me came
A thought I did not want.
That cross was mine!

The ground was cold beneath my knees
As my tears poured out guilt and lips confessed,
”Oh, God! The world can’t find Him
For He died upon my cross.”
I heard a whisper – gently – gently in my head.
“No cross could hold me. It is finished.
Now I live!”

I looked up from my weeping
And my eyes did have new sight; The plastic figures smiled,
There was no darkness, only Light!
Jesus! Jesus! Everywhere!
New faith how sweet it be!
I looked – praise God! I found Him!
He had just been born in me!
Author unknown

Father, with the angels I sing, Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Thank you for this Holy Baby and this Holy Day!

The Twenty Eighth Day of Advent, 2016

Saturday, December 24, 2016
Christmas Eve

At the very time Simeon was praying, she [Anna] showed up, broke into an anthem of praise to God, and talked about the child to all who were waiting expectantly for the freeing of Jerusalem.  Luke 2:38 MSG

I love Anna. She represents many things that I long to be. She faithfully went to the temple area to worship. She fasted and prayed. Her husband had died after a very short marriage – seven years – and for the rest of her earthly years God had been the focus of her life!

When she saw Joseph, Mary, and the Baby Jesus, The Message says she burst forth in an anthem. I guess it would be safe to say that she just couldn’t stand to be quiet! She had to sing! Nothing in the text tells me that her voice was lovely or her anthem angelic! After all, she was 84 years old, and her anthem may have cracked and squeaked a bit! But that didn’t stop her. She sang!

Even old ladies burst forth singing when they come face to face with the living God! I guess that’s another reason that I like Anna. Though I am not as old as she, I am certainly no longer young. I know I can’t sing anymore, at least not the quality that would qualify me for anybody’s choir. But as I approach this time of year to celebrate the coming of Christ, into not just this big wide world but my little corner of it, I just cannot help it! I want to sing!

Father, the psalm says to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. That may be all I can manage – noise. But my heart is so full, so I am grateful that you will accept my “joyful noise.”

The Twenty Seventh Day of Advent, 2016

Friday, December 23, 2016

God, you can now release your servant; release me in peace as you promised. With my own eyes I’ve seen your salvation; it’s now out in the open for everyone to see: A God-revealing light to the non-Jewish nations, and of glory for your people Israel.  Luke 2:29-32 MSG

Dear old Simeon! Translations use different adjectives to describe him – devout, righteous, good, prayerful, expectant. He knew that God had promised a Messiah, and he had prayed that he would live to see the promise fulfilled! When Joseph and Mary took Jesus to the temple for His circumcision and dedication when He was eight days old, Simeon was there – waiting for the Messiah. There is no indication that Simeon knew of the birth. No angels had appeared to him that we know about. But when he saw this couple with their baby, he knew! Here was the One he’d been waiting to see. The Scripture says that the Holy Spirit was upon him. He could not contain himself. He took the baby into his arms, and cried out to God. “Now, I can die. He’s here. My salvation is here.” (my paraphrase)

The New International Version of the Bible says: which you have prepared in the sight of all people. I like The Message paraphrase better: out in the open for everyone to see. There are lots of mysteries in the Bible, things that we have trouble understanding, but this is no secret! It’s out in the open. All we have to do is to see.

Father, let this Christ who lives in my heart be no mystery to anyone but out in the open for all to see.

The Twenty Sixth Day of Advent, 2016

Thursday, December 22, 2016

And when they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.  Luke 2:17-18

I have learned – sometimes painfully – that the world does not like the word “evangelism.” Sometimes the dislike even carries into the church. We don’t like it because we are afraid if we accept it as part of our Christian language, we will have to talk about being “born again,” about “coming to Christ,” about “becoming part of the family of God.” Isn’t it interesting that Christians are afraid of the word, even though we know more about how important it is than the shepherds knew? They could not wait to tell; we are more terrified of telling than they were of the angelic announcement!

This is the greatest news the world has ever heard. The God of Creation has entered the earth! And we are afraid to tell. We are afraid that people will think we are nuts! That we are fanatics! We are not afraid to tell everyone we know that Tiger Woods has broken all records on almost every golf course in the world. But we are afraid to tell our closest friends that Jesus Christ has broken the bond of death and has come to give us life – not on the golf course but eternally! We are afraid to tell that He has come to us in a personal way, establishing a relationship with us, and our lives are changed forever!

Father, Forgive me for ever being afraid – or, even worse, ashamed – to tell others about you! Give me a holy boldness that will allow me to be “winsome” that I may “win some.” Amen.

The Twenty Fifth Day of Advent, 2016

Wednesday, December 21, 2016

And this will be a sign for you; you will find a baby wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger.  Luke 2:12

I wonder if we are not dangerously familiar with the Christmas narrative in Luke. I know I am. I can recite a large portion of this chapter, so I certainly cannot fool myself into thinking that I am really seeing these familiar verses with “new understanding” – unless, that is, God helps me think of them in a different way.

There’s a problem with this text in my life, and maybe in the lives of other believers. I keep on thinking of the “baby” Jesus. I think of Him like this at Christmas – warm and tiny and sweet. But the truth of the matter is that Christmas is only the beginning. He did not stay in that manger, so if that is as far as I go with my Christmas thoughts, I will miss the whole point. He grew to show me what growing is all about. He enjoyed his disciples to teach me about real friendship. He taught to let me know that truth is really there, and that I can find it. He suffered to help me get through the hard times. He died to pay a debt He did not owe because I owe a debt I cannot pay. He rose, overcoming death, so that even death – my earthly death – cannot separate me from my Heavenly Father.

If I continue to look for Him in a manger – the sign that was promised the shepherds – I won’t find Him! That was a perfect sign for them. It won’t work for me! I’ve got to look for the crucified, risen Lord, even at Christmas!

Father, never allow me to stay at the manger. Take me to the cross. Amen.

The Twenty Fourth Day of Advent, 2016

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

[Gabriel] said to [Zechariah], “Do not be afraid Zechariah; your prayer has been heard.”  Luke1:13

I’ve been trying to imagine what must have gone on in the mind of Zechariah when he heard Gabriel speak to him.

Zechariah was a priest, and he knew that in years past God had spoken to men – even to a few women – directly or through angels. But for many years, God had not spoken! There is no record in that huge expanse of inter-testamental years that God said a single word! For about four hundred years!

Now, out of the blue, as he is in prayer, devout Zechariah hears an incredible message, brought to him by none other than the angel Gabriel! Is it any wonder that he is shocked beyond belief and could not speak for nine months? He must have wanted to run from the temple telling everyone not only that Gabriel had spoken, but that his message was wonderful! But he could not! For nine months, he could not speak. God was about to do something spectacular. At last He had spoken and poor Zechariah had been stricken dumb!

Father, today it’s not that you don’t speak; it’s that I don’t listen! Please forgive me! I don’t want to be struck dumb as Zechariah was. I want to hear you as you remind me of the miracle that you began 2000 years ago. I know you speak it clearly through your Word. I want to hear that Christmas message with fresh awareness this year. Please, Lord! Amen

The Twenty Third Day of Advent, 2016

Monday, December 19, 2016

And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.  Luke 2:9

I guess it’s no wonder that they were terribly frightened! An angelic appearance was enough to get their attention, but the angel was accompanied by the Shekinah Glory of God! The glory of the Lord, that awesome great light of the presence of Almighty God, lighted the whole hillside! Perhaps terribly frightened is Luke’s understatement of the season!

Never having seen an angel that I know of, I can only imagine their fear! But I have had moments when I knew beyond any shadow of doubt that I was standing on holy ground, that Almighty God was indeed present. Oh, I know that He never leaves me, but I mean one of those epiphany moments. He’s not only with me, but He is standing there! I’d be scared to death if I did not know that I don’t need to be afraid of God, since He’s taught me that I may approach Him with confidence (Hebrews 4:16). If I did not believe Jesus when He told me that He no longer calls me servant, but now He calls me friend (John 15:15), such an appearance would literally terrify me!

Angels are great, and I hope someday to see one. But the really awesome experience is to know that the Glory of the Lord shines around about to tell me that my Friend, the greatest Friend the world will ever know, is about to be born!

Father, thank you for coming yourself to tell us about your Son, not just our Savior, but our Friend! Amen

The Shepherds Candle

By Patience Fort

Most likely when you think of the Shepherds Candle in the Advent Wreath, you think of the clan out on the hillside: “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.” Luke 2:8 NIV

But I have a little different approach to this week’s candle.
I’d like to take the liberty of suggesting that the Shepherd’s Candle could refer to the “Good Shepherd” – Jesus Christ the newborn King.

“Like a shepherd, he will care for his flock,
gathering the lambs in his arms,
Hugging them as he carries them,
leading the nursing ewes to good pasture.
Isaiah 40:11 MSG

As was foretold of Him hundreds of years before His birth, Jesus would be the ultimate Shepherd. Can’t you just see Him gently carrying His little lambs?  And leading us?

“God, my shepherd!  I don’t need a thing.
You have bedded me down in lush meadows,
you find me quiet pools to drink from.
True to your word, you let me catch my breath
and send me in the right direction.
Even when the way goes through Death Valley,
I’m not afraid when you walk at my side.

Your trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure.
Psalm 23:1-4 MSG

Yes, this Shepherd King walks with us daily, guiding and guarding all the way.  And He promises that after this life, we will live with Him forever. (Psalm 23:6)  Interestingly, the Old Testament even refers to His position of honor in heaven and to His saving might at the judgement.

Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock.
You who sit enthroned between the cherubim,
shine forth
 before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.
Awaken your might; come and save us.
Psalm 80:1-2 NIV

Today's Shepherd’s Candle reminds me that Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the newborn King is my Good and Perfect Shepherd.  He loves me. He protects me. He reins me in with his disciplinary staff. He laid down His life for me. He rose from the dead to claim victory over Satan on my behalf. He is preparing a home for me with Him in heaven where He will reign forever as the Shepherd King.

Thank you, Lord, for being my Shepherd. I am so very secure in your care.

The Twenty First Day of Advent, 2016

Saturday, December 17, 2016

For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy.  Luke 1:44

I’ve read this verse hundreds of times, and always thought it wonderful that the baby Elizabeth carried, the one who would one day be called “John the Baptist,” recognized the voice of the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. Later, Luke tells us that after John’s birth, The hand of the Lord was upon him [John].  But here, while he was still in his mother’s womb, it’s obvious that the Holy Spirit was already making John aware of the Lord.

As I read this portion of the Christmas narrative again, I actually thought, “That’s great, and I’m glad. But what does that say to me today?”

Perhaps more than I ever knew!  When I hear again this year Emmanuel, will something inside me – in my heart – leap for joy that God is with me? When I hear the choir sing Joy to the World, will I breathe a little faster at the renewed realization that the Lord has really come?  When I give a gift to someone, wrapped as beautifully as I can manage it, will I know in the depths of my being that the greatest gift of all was the one God gave to me, wrapped in the form of a tiny infant? When I fix our annual gifts for the needy, will I be aware of what that tiny baby later told me that whatever I do for someone else, I do for Him?

Father, forgive me for overlooking what you have wanted me to hear in this verse for so long, looking at it only as something nice in the Christmas story. Forgive me for not seeing that you want something in me, my own spirit, to leap for joy at the sound of the good news of Jesus’ birth. Amen

The Twentieth Day of Advent, 2016

Friday, December 16, 2016

Because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the Sunrise from on high shall visit us, “to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”  Matthew 1:78-79

Zachariah, filled with the Holy Spirit, broke his nine-month silence by quoting from Isaiah 9:2. Years and years before, the prophet had proclaimed God’s promise of a Messiah, and suddenly Zachariah realized that the promised Messiah was at hand! Darkness would be obliterated by the wonder of His Light!

That was good news then, and it is surely good news today! As I read the morning paper and the horrors of man’s inhumanity to man, I am sometimes overcome by the darkness of this world. People don’t love people, whom they can see. Why am I surprised that they don’t love God, whom they cannot see? Depression would overwhelm me, were it not for the fact that God’s promised Jesus has come to bring light into my darkness, to remove fear from the shadow of death.

And guide my feet into the way of peace? Yes, even that, though not the peace that the word is crying for right now but instead the greater peace that passes all understanding. One of the names of God revealed in the Old Testament is Jehovah-Shalom, the God of Peace. He guides into His shalom, which is like being in the eye of a hurricane while the storm is raging all around.

Father, my heart is strangely still as I trust in you. I hear the winds of war and the cries of pain all around me, and I am grieved. But I rest in the knowledge that you are God of the Universe. It’s in your hands. Amen
