He Makes All Things New

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

He told them this parable:
“No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one.
Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.”
Luke‬ ‭5:36-38‬ ‭NIV‬‬

With the turn of the new year, we tend to look toward turning over a new leaf or starting anew. As you know, the failure rate on New Years resolutions is pretty high. Why? Because we aim too high and it takes too much energy to reach our goals. We are human.

But what if we were to truly grasp the concept that “God is God and we are not?”

It is God who can make us new. Not us.
It is God who can mend our broken hearts. Not us.
It is God who can transform us into useful vessels. Not us.

So no matter what our goals are for this year, we should approach them with the proper focus. First we should turn away from the sin in our lives. Then we should give God full access to every part of our lives so that He can make us new. Only then can we gain any traction toward our resolutions and bring glory to God.

Lord, You have promised to make us new. But sometimes we wriggle and squirm and refuse to be still long enough for you to do Your work. Help us to yield to your craftsmanship in our lives and to glorify You as a result.
