Top 10 Resolutions: Read More

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions:

I don't mind reading -- especially if I'm ready to take a nap! Nothing puts me to sleep faster!

But reading can really be beneficial. It can make you think. It can open new horizons.

As with anything we put into our brains, we should use some discretion about what types of things we read.

Are you interested in world religions? Then explore them. But be selective about the author's perspective. For instance, I think world religions are best understood as compared to Christianity. They can really be confusing otherwise.

Do you like politics? There are some really good books out there about our founding fathers. My mother really liked the book, "Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation," by Cokie Roberts. I think its really hard to read about politics, though, without facing some pretty significant bias. In my opinion, it's hard to find truth and reality in this arena.

What about fiction? Don't pick up some variable shade of black and white to fill your mind with grey. Select things that are wholesome, uplifting, gritty, inspiring, challenging, etc. Ask yourself this question. "If I were reading this book and my pastor walked in, would I be embarrassed?" If the answer is, yes, then don't read it.

No matter what you decide to read -- sports, cooking, camping, etc -- don't let it take the place of Bible study.

Lord, Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Give me the curiosity I need to explore your Word more. I want my life to be better illuminated both for me to see where I'm going and for others to see You in me.
