Have you ever stopped to think about where we would be if we did not have some simple inventions — like the wheel? What a different place we would have if somebody hadn’t figured out how to successfully put a wheel on an axle. Right?
But what about thenail?
Woodworkers would be stuck with tongue and groove or dovetail joints. The construction of our homes and offices wouldn’t be possible without the nail — or it’s cousin, the screw.
So when did the nail first appear?
Way back in something like 2500 BC. They were beaten with a hammer, or wrought, from square iron strips.
Later they were made from metal sheets.
Then they were fashioned from wire.
Can you imagine hammering out nothing but nails every day? Makes me glad we came up with machines to do it for us.
What other inventions do you think are particularly monumental? Tomorrow we will look at another one.
