Did you know that July 2, 1776 is when the Second Continental Congress of the Thirteen Colonies approved our resolution of independence from Great Britain?
That’s when they started working on a formal document explaining our decision. Two days later, on July 4th, Congress approved our Declaration of Independence and our nation was born.
Great Britain didn’t quite see it that way. And our freedom from their rule would cost us dearly. It is estimated that 1 out of every 20 men (roughly 25,000) in America died during the war — and another 25,000 British soldiers died as well.
It wasn’t until 1783, though, that Great Britain acknowledged our victory and recognized us as a sovereign nation.
As I write this, my family is on vacation in Williamsburg, VA. So I’ve decided to dedicate the week to our nation’s early history. Happy 242nd Birthday, America. May you have many more.
