Star-Nosed Mole

Tuesday, July 24, 2018

God, indeed, has a sense of humor! And this little guy has a face only a mother would love. He is both intriguing and a little intimidating in his cute-ugliness.

This is the star-nosed mole.
He lives underground in the wetlands of southeastern Canada and northeastern United States. His crazy nose helps him find and identify food since he is virtually blind. Interestingly enough, his nose is so specialized that he can locate, identify, and consume a morsel of food in something like a fifth of a second. His nose also is capable of smelling under water! That’s crazy!

Here’s how important this strange little nose is to the mole. It is about a tenth the size of the mole but over 50% of his brain is dedicated to the nose.

Today’s video is only about 3 minutes, but I think you’ll find it to be fascinating.
To my knowledge, there is not a day dedicated to this star-nosed mammal.  Perhaps we should create one!
