Symbols of Freedom

We are surrounded by icons today. From golden arches or a swoosh or a cross to the octagon of a stop sign — we don’t need words to know what these symbols mean. 

What are some symbols of freedom in the United States?

• The Star Spangled Banner (the flag and the song)
• the eagle 🦅 
• Lady Justice
• The Statue of Liberty
• Independence Hall
• The Liberty Bell

And because of our freedoms in the United States, Christians are able to sport symbols of our faith:

• a cross
• a Bible
• an Ichthus
• a dove

We should show respect for all of these icons — not because of the symbols themselves but because of the freedoms they represent. The sacrifices behind these symbols are too great for us to comprehend. And to take them lightly is to disregard the lives lost on our behalf.
