The Best Caregiver

What makes a good caregiver?

(1)    Compassion - Love and respect come into play here. A good caregiver has an uncanny way of understanding the needs of another and being able to determine how to help.

(2]    Patience - Sometimes this is a really important quality to have, for many recipients of our care can’t or won’t respond positively to it. Yet a good caregiver is persistent and even-tempered anyway.

(3)    Communication - Being able to listen to, understand and respond carefully to people is key.

These are only three of many important traits of a good caregiver. They don’t take into account the professional training that might be important like a medical, financial or psychology background. They also don’t delve into the vast need for spiritual attention and direction that good caregivers can provide.

And there is one very interesting thing to note here.  Nowhere is there mention of being a mother as a mandatory qualification for being a good caregiver.

I know a lot of fine women who, for whatever reason, have no children yet who are excellent caregivers. They are compassionate, caring, helpful, intuitive, thoughtful and giving.

Today is Mother's Day. As we celebrate the mothers in our lives, may we be cognizant of the women who find today difficult to navigate. May we honor all the caregivers in our lives today and every day.

LORD, thank you for our mothers, for without them we would not be. Thank you for the women in our lives who have been surrogate mothers to us when ours was unavailable. May we be the moms/caregivers that the world needs. And may you have all the glory.
