Johnson: Part III

May 14, 2025

Where has Johnson been to school?

Johnson and I started researching possible medical schools almost as soon as we met. We initially felt the best pathway was for him to go to the Dominican Republic. After obtaining a passport, he gathered his belongings and headed to Santiago on his first adventure.

First, though, he had to learn Spanish. He finished the language course while also getting involved with “GO Ministries.” And, of course, it really helped that he was immersed in the culture. So he did pretty well.

Then COVID hit and Johnson had to go home. The Dominican closed its borders to Haitians so we had to re-think his plan.

Our next choice was for him to go to a medical school in Port au Prince. So he found an apartment there and started taking classes.

Then the gangs took over the city and the university closed its doors. Johnson packed his things and returned home.

The next option we had was for him to come to the US. That was by far the most expensive and the most time-consuming choice. But it seemed like the only viable alternative.

So he started working hard on English and I started researching immigration laws. All I have to say about that is, “whew!”

LORD, Thank you for protecting Johnson in his travels. I know he has learned a lot. We don’t quite understand this pathway he’s been on but we trust that it fits into your plan. Amen.
