Our Food in Greece and Italy

Wednesday, June 18, 2025

One of the wonderful things about traveling is sampling food from the region. Inside the US, for instance, we also have our differences from place to place: sauerkraut served with every meal in Amana, Iowa or white sausage gravy on biscuits in the South.

In Greece we ate a lot of olives, honey, tzatziki sauce and gyros.

In Italy it was pizza, pasta and tiramisu.

For breakfast at the hotel in Athens, they displayed a honeycomb with a knife to just carve away what you want. Patrick loved that.

Dining out in both countries was a lengthy event involving delicious food, good friends and perhaps a little wine. You can’t rush a good thing!

On the ship we had our choice of eating from the buffet or in the main dining room. Here I selected things I knew my system could handle.

Patrick took advantage of some real, concentrated coffee at the showroom of a Greek weaver. I don’t think he was ready for it.

Don’t ask me why I ordered this dish. Calamari? Bicuspids? Crawfish? What was I thinking?! I hid the pesky little beady eyes of the crawfish behind something and ate pretty much all of the rest.

Olives seemed to find their way onto just about every plate.

I don’t know how common this popcorn is in Greece, but “Poppers” is what our grandchildren call Bill. So I had to send him a picture of it.

Tom had a pizza with paper thin crust while I had an Italian favorite, carbonara.

This was on display as we entered our little restaurant close to the Trevi Fountain.

They call these pies but they are more like pastries as we know them filled with quiche-like yumminess.

I tried dolmas probably three times in Greece — grape leaves rolled and stuffed with a rice concoction. I never really got to the point where I liked them.

Suppli is pretty common in Italy. Patrick and I tried some in Ostia and really liked it.

Patrick got spaghetti with meatballs and I got cheese pizza before we headed into the Vatican.

And this is how you get your son to blush — have your waitress bring him some birthday cake!

LORD, Thank you for the opportunity to eat new things. You have given us so many wonderful options for sustenance. May we honor your provisions with loyal service.
