The Word of God

Sunday, August 3, 2025

We went to Anchor Baptist Church today because our son, Patrick, was preaching. He ended with some Scripture from Hebrews that started me to think.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬
I have always thought about this verse as it applies to the word of God being the Scripture. And, indeed, I think it does.

But could the “word” be talking about the “Word” — Jesus?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Jesus is, indeed, alive and active.
He comes to live in His children, penetrating into the nooks and crannies of our very innermost hearts.
He judges our thoughts and attitudes.

If this passage isn’t talking about Jesus, then it’s talking about the Sword of the Holy Spirit. So either way it’s pretty cool. And I’m glad that God is still working in my life and in the world as a whole.

LORD, thank you that you didn’t just wind us up like a toy and leave us to aimlessly unwind. Thank you for living in us and for convicting us of transgressions that need to be addressed. Thank you for your mercy and your grace.
