When I was a girl, I used to love to go through my mother’s button box. It contained such treasures — big buttons, little buttons, all different kinds of colored buttons, wooden buttons, bone buttons, buttons with two holes, buttons with four. For that little girl, it had every button ever made in that box.
Last week I needed to replace a button on one of Bill’s suit coats. Naturally I went to mothers old box (which now is actually three boxes) to search for a match. I searched and sorted through all those buttons — and there were hundreds of them — but could not find one suitable for the job. Now, after making a trip to Hobby Lobby, the button box has four more brown ones that match Bill’s suit coat.
Unbelievers might spend a lifetime searching for that perfect button that fits a certain buttonhole in their lives. They might settle for one that is a little too small or a little too off color. It is up to us to help them realize that there is only one button that will fit the bill. Only the Jesus-button will perfectly fit that God-sized buttonhole in their lives.
Lord, help us to discern when someone we know is seeking you. Give us the courage to introduce them to you so that you can hold them together and they can be complete.
