What is God's Will?

Friday, March 2, 2018

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:15-20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

In searching for God’s will for our lives, sometimes I think we make it harder than it really is. We think His will is out there somewhere — in the unknown realms — and its mystery is too grand for us to ever really grasp.

But this week we’ve seen that:
  1. It is His will that none should perish but that all should come to fellowship with Him.
  2. He wants us to act justly, love mercy, walk humbly, do good, and give thanks.
  3. He wants us to be careful and wise and to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
If God himself in the form of the Holy Spirit lives in our lives, how can we not have some idea what His will is for us? Will we not have that tug at our heart if we are tempted to partake in revelrous drinking and debauchery? Will we not have a desire to praise the Lord and to do things to please Him?

God wants to give us more specific directions for our lives. But if we don’t trust Him or if we question His motives, then we’ll have a hard time knowing what His will is.

So start with the basics we’ve outlined this week and move on from there. Jeff Prosser is by guest blogger tomorrow. What will he have to say about God’s will. Stay tuned.

Lord, help us to simplify our quest for discerning your will for our lives. Your plan for us is individualized and perfect and we thank you for that.
