Although the sun moves across the sky from east to west, the moon travels from west to east. We don't normally think about this, I don't think, because we aren't as keenly aware of the moon's location throughout the day or night.
Interestingly, the earth rotates on its axis 30 times for every one time that the moon travels around the earth. (That makes sense because there are about 30 days in the different phases of the moon.)
As a result, the eclipse today will start in Oregon and end in South Carolina.
Did you know that the next major eclipse to traverse the US will be on April 8, 2024? It will start in North America in Mexico, enter the US in Texas, move across to Maine, and exit North America through Canada. We won't be in the path of totality in central Kentucky. My husband and I might be making plans to visit southern Illinois around that time!
Enjoy the eclipse today, y'all. Remember that our God created the Universe. Praise Him as we experience the majesty of His handiwork.
An eclipse as seen from space.
