The Scripture Rebukes

REBUKING
Tuesday, February 21, 2017

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
What is rebuking?
Expressing sharp disapproval or criticism of someone because of their behavior or actions (reprimanding, reproaching, scolding, admonishing, reproving, chastising, taking to task).

What gives God the right to rebuke us?
Because he is our Father.
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? Hebrews 12:7 NIV Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire. Proverbs 29:17 NIV
Why does he rebuke us?
Because He loves us and wants us to grow up to be strong, mature, contributing members of society. (That’s the reason why we disciplined our children.)
…”My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Hebrews 12:5-7 NIV
Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Revelation 3:19 NIV
I don’t know about you but I am unfortunately not unlike the Israelites of the Old Testament.  I get my act together as far as the Lord is concerned. Then little by little I get complacent and let my thirst for power take control, leaving God in the background of my life. Then something catastrophic-ish happens and God gets my attention. I turn from my egocentric ways and He restores me to His presence. Then, before I know it, I repeat the process. Yes, I need His rebuke and discipline.

Lord, Thank you for keeping us in line, even when it means chastising or reprimanding us. Thank you that you love us enough to do that. May we learn from you.
