This is what the LORD says— your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.
Isaiah 48:17-18 NIV
I have heard people say, “I need to learn from my own mistakes.” Well, maybe. In the passage above, God tells the Israelites that they not only could have avoided heartache but they could have experienced great peace if they had just followed His ways to start with.
That’s the way it was with Adam and Eve. God told them what to do and what to avoid. If they had followed His guidelines, their joy and peace would have been incredible. But they wanted to be free to make their own mistakes. And they did. And we all suffer as a result.
Why can’t we acknowledge that God teaches us what is best for us, directs our paths, and gives us perfect commands. We don’t need to rebel against His authority in order to learn. We can be obedient from the start. And our learning and maturity will be full of peace. Full.
Lord, help us to look to you and your word when we are in the process of making decisions. Help us to do things based on your precepts and not on social opinion.
